The division of labor is an important determinant of worker productivity, yet little is known about how firms reorganize jobs when automation disrupts the set of tasks performed by workers. I extend the traditional tradeoff between specialization and coordination costs by modeling automation as a change to the content of work. The model predicts that automation changes worker specialization according to whether adoption creates new coordination demands or substitutes for coordination activities. I test these predictions using data from more than 119 million job postings and worker employment histories from more than 190,000 U.S. firms. Using a shift-share instrument for automation adoption, I find substantial heterogeneity across technologies: robotics and software broaden jobs, whereas AI narrows them. These differences are mirrored by changes in coordination work: robotics and software increase both coordination among workers and interaction between workers and technology, while AI reduces both. Technologies also differ in how they change the tacit content of human work. Robotics and AI leave workers performing relatively more tacit tasks, whereas software shifts their responsibilities toward more codified tasks. Together, these results show that automation changes the design of jobs, the coordination required within firms, and the tasks that remain with workers.
